I have had the most incredible time celebrating my small town over the last few days. I am so excited to move to Columbus in a little more than a month (yikes), but it's making my last month living in Ross County a little bitter sweet.
I've been spending a ton of time in the growing downtown of Chillicothe, OH and have developed a whole new appreciation for small business owners and why it is SO important to support them. First (and most importantly) shopping small creates and supports local jobs. In fact, nearly two thirds of all new jobs are created by small businesses. Secondly, it aids the national economy. Small businesses are responsible for over half the GDP, so there's really nothing small about it.
In Chillicothe specifically I DEFINITELY have a few recommendations, and I will be making even more next month as I start getting to know Grove City a little better. This week on National Donut Day I made a special trip across town to pick up Crispie Creme donuts. I consider myself an expert on donuts, and I have tried them from more stores than I could ever count, so believe me when I tell you that these are the best.
I've also been totally obsessed with Schegal's coffee house on Paint Street since I was in junior high. I have had so many of my most memorable life chats sitting on their couches drinking a Milky Way mocha. When I go in, I ask for "my regular," and they know just what I mean.
Fire and Stone pizza and Grinder's grilled cheese are insanely good for lunch, and lately I've been loving Totem, an incredibly tasteful gift shop full of locally made home goods, apparel, jewelry, etc.
Today my family and I competed in the Chillicothe Challenge. We ran around the downtown completing challenges (like this crazy foam pit) and earning points with other Chillicothe families. Getting to plug into such a fun and community minded event in one of the biggest perks of living in a small town.
What are your favorite small business finds? Comment and give me some recommendations!
